๐Ÿฆ– What's YOUR T-Rex? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Published 3 months agoย โ€ขย 2 min read

Hi Reader!

Have you ever run from a dinosaur? No?

Well, if you're curious, it looks like this...

(Yes, that really is me flailing away from a T-Rex.)

As creatives, we can find inspiration anywhere, and thinking back on my family trip to Hawaii made me realize that I'm real damn good at empowering my own worst fears.

Looking at that video now is fun. I think about how well it turned out, how comical my arm-waving looks.

But then I remember my mindset in the moment, when the tour guide told us to run from an imaginary T-Rex and make it look dramatic.

๐Ÿ˜ฐ I almost didn't do it.

Because what if people were watching? (They were.)

What if I looked ridiculous? (I did.)

What if they judged me for it? (๐Ÿคท Hey, they were filming, too!)

Sometimes the smallest fears can feel like T-Rex threats.

Writing fiction is a vulnerable process. It requires constant re-commitment to your craft.

Publishing your work is even scarier.

As a working writer, you're constantly facing down fearsโ€”sometimes, fears you didn't even realize you had. Every day is an adventure in 'what sort of emotional turmoil can I put myself in today'?

๐Ÿ‘‰ But most of those hurdles are in our heads.

Being a creative writer is not a journey for the meek. We don't just write stories... we create communities, societies, worlds. We push boundaries.

And there's nothing comfortable about challenging the status quo.

โœจ The keep-on-keepin'-on magic is in how you frame the story. ๐ŸŽž๏ธ

That day at Kualoa Ranch? The threat wasn't the T-Rex. In reality, I was running from absolutely nothing. The dinosaur in the video is just a tiny little head-on-a-stick toy the tour guide put in front of the lens.

My real struggle that day was against myself. And by "running away" (doing the video) and choosing the path of discomfort, I faced down my own insecurities and just let myself do something unique and fun.

Even though I felt silly performing in front of the tour group. (๐Ÿ˜… Hoo, did I!!)

Sometimes you're the only one who knows what's best for you.

So next time you're terrified of something intangible, turn around and face it head on. Recognize what will inch you closer to your personal goals.

Remember why you started this journey to begin with.

And make friends with your T-Rex.

Hi Reader! I am a big Ansel Adams fan. ๐Ÿ“ท There is something about the way he captured emotion in his photographs that just โœจ lights me up. But only some of his images evoke that gut-clenching, tear-inducing feeling of rapture in me. ๐Ÿค” And I wonder why that is? Even though I know he was a skilled photographer, why aren't I affected by all of his images? (Never heard of Ansel Adams? Check out some of his work here.) Sometimes the story we're trying to tell is not the one that comes out on...

Cover of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

Hi Reader! Have you ever read a book you just cannot stop thinking about? Well that's me right now with A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. Let's take a moment here to chat about a little quirk of mine that gets me into so much trouble. I am STUBBORN. You can pretty much rely on me to do the opposite of what: someone tells me to do, someone thinks I should do, or everyone else is obsessing over. For the most part, I'm pretty happy with the way this works out for me. ๐Ÿคทโ™€๏ธ But...
